2008-2009 Concert Season

The first of our three-concert subscription series, the St. John Passion concert of October 22, received high praise from James Oestreich, NY Times music critic (click here to read review).

We now move on to the second concert in the series, our two traditional holiday performances of Handel’s Messiah, scheduled this year for December 22 and 23. These are the only all-professional performances of Messiah during the holiday season at Carnegie Hall. Click here for more details.

Musica Sacra’s Messiah performances continue to set the standard for this work, invariably receiving high critical and audience acclaim. Here are a few quotes from recent reviews, all from the NY Times:

“A ‘Messiah’ with silvery sopranos, flowing lines and no bombast….”

“Brisk but fluid tempos and transparent textures…”

“…focused, trim sound, which puts the choral texts consistently in high relief and keeps Handel’s vivid, painterly orchestration - the flames of the refiner’s fire, the raging of the nations - equally lithe.”

And this from New York Magazine:

“I doubt very much if the city offers a better version of Messiah”

Please join us for this great holiday tradition.

Note: Musica Sacra will also be presenting a special non-subscription concert at the World Financial Center, prior to the holiday season, on November 18. See the Spotlight box at left, or check out the full concert schedule here.
